Sulwyn Lok

Picture
Singaporean composer-conductor Sulwyn Lok (b. 1994) aims to create emotional experiences with music. This forms the core principle behind his eclectic repertoire - be it works for the Chinese orchestra (including The Harbinger, November’s Overture, Christmas Creatures), symphony orchestra (Oriental Winds), string orchestra (Caprice of Nature), a variety of ensembles, and theatre sound design (Fix(,) the Musical) - as demonstrated by the ability of the music to move both seasoned critics and young students alike. Featured locally and abroad, his conducting and music have respectively been described as “instantly enkindling the stage” (Lianhe Zaobao, 2014) and “magical” (The Straits Times, 2018).
With a mission to reconcile the arts with society, Sulwyn was producer and conductor of The New Tomorrow 2015 - A Benefit Concert for Children Charities, leading a fusion orchestra with award-winning vocalists and soloists to raise awareness and funds for Riverkids Project, Rare Disorders Society Singapore (RDSS) and the Singapore Children’s Society. More recently, he coordinated a project in 2017 to hold music workshops at the Lao National School of Music and Dance and served as conductor for the combined orchestra of Lao, Thai and Singapore teachers and students at the culminating concert.

Sulwyn’s conducting journey led him to receive guidance from maestro Hu Bingxu when he was selected to be Youth Conductor for the Youth Chinese Chamber Music Project 2014 (Singapore), and maestro Col. Prateep Suphanrojn (Resident Conductor, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra).

Other than writing and conducting, Sulwyn is an active ruan and sanxian musician. He clinched the First Prize in the Ensemble Open Category of the National Chinese Music Competition 2014 with the Ding Yi Youth Ensemble, and led the ensemble as Artistic Coordinator. He is also gaoyin ruan musician of the Singapore Ruan Ensemble and was ruan musician of the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra from 2011 - 2015, under the tutelage of Seetoh Poh Lam.

Sulwyn is the co-founder and conductor of Victoria Chinese Orchestra (VACO), a creative community of musicians with a social commitment, working to connect music with people. He is currently a final-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree in Recording Arts and Science at the National University of Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, under a full scholarship.
